Get Your Little One to Sleep

This blog was written collaboratively with Liz Harden of Little Dipper Sleep. Liz is a Sleep Coach for kids and adults of all ages.

Babies need quality sleep to grow and thrive. Precisely how much sleep a baby needs varies both by age from one child to the next, but all babies follow these general trends.

AS CHILDREN GET OLDER:

1) they sleep less in the day and more at night
2) they stay awake longer between naps
3) they have longer periods of consolidated sleep at night and fewer night wakings
4) they need less sleep overall

Keep in mind that new skills like rolling, sitting, crawling, or pulling up, and new cognitive leaps such as an understanding of cause and effect or separation anxiety, can impact sleep.

Regardless of your baby’s age, avoiding over-tiredness, maintaining consistent wake up and bedtime routines regardless of what new skills or cognitive leaps your child is working on, and keeping a relatively stable morning wake up time will lead to better sleep.
